Restaurant Hot-Spot(light): Fresh

Fresh has the best vegan food I have ever had. Period.  Can you believe this is VEGAN?


Crispy tofu steaks, grilled tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato and garlic mayo in a whole wheat tortilla served with a side of marinated kale slaw and yukon fries.


Pumpkin cupcake with cinnamon frosting and an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie from Sweets from the Earth.

The food was legit.  The tofu tasted like meat.  It was so good that I went back the next week and ordered the same thing again (besides, it was their November special).  I must somehow find the recipe and re-create this…

Restaurant Hot-Spot(light): Aux Vivres

One of my favorite vegan restaurant hot-spots is Aux Vivres.  In my humble opinion, it doesn’t compare to Fresh, but the food’s pretty good, pretty reasonable and the atmosphere is pretty nice.  The staff is also pretty friendly.  They have recently done some renovations and they have a newly re-vamped take-out counter as well as a juice bar.  Oh yeah — they deliver too!  So many of my Montreal-memories were created in this restaurant alone…

If you are a vegetarian, you must visit this place if you visit Montreal!

salad & chutney. I didn’t order this; my friend did. It looked aight.


I guess she liked it.

Things I Used to Eat

One of the main reasons I was reticent about becoming a vegetarian or a vegan was because of all of the yummy things on which I’d be missing out.  Let’s take a short trip down memory lane shall we?

Exhibit A


Curry goat, rice and peas, fried plantain and a salad at Caribbean Curry House (in Montreal). It was delish!

Exhibit B


Chicken soup. With Ramen noodles. Like a boss.
(I threw away that sachet/packet of seasoning that the noodles came with though. This is made with chicken broth).

Saltfish. Nuff said.

Exhibit D


Saltfish fritters. For those who don’t know, it’s basically a batter (flour, maybe some cornmeal, baking powder) with green onions, peppers, and salted cod, fried like a pancake. Yummy!!

I forget what this was called. All I know is that it tasted REAL good. It was a chicken sandwich with a side of fries and a Mexican soup of some sort. It was the best soup I have ever had in my life. Hands down. This meal was at the Cheesecake Factory in downtown Baltimore, Maryland (December 2010).

So yeah.  That’s what I gave up for a life of vegetables.  lol.  No, I’m joking.  I still have no regrets!  Actually, I think the most rewarding part of this whole thing is that I’ve been able to recreate and cook stuff that tastes just as good and is good for me!
